Alternatively there are derby/blouchers which would be like this AE Clifton where the vamp is more open and appears more liek it has been applied to the side of the shoe and then is pulled together when ties. Clark desert boots have an open vamp and it not uncommon for it to be tied loosely. Hooks like the OP applied are more common when you want to really pull the vamp tightly closed. /u/OXBLOODHORWEEN6 seems to be taking issue with the disparate intentions of the hook addition and the original aesthetic of the boot. I don think it looks bad, but I can see his point.
