Lafayette A Lafayette man suspected of fleeing the scene of a crash Sunday night that killed a middle school student told investigators that he thought he hit an animal, court documents allege.
Robert V. Kirts II, 42, was arrested Monday afternoon after a Lafayette police officer found a black Jeep Liberty in the Royal Oaks Mobile Home Park that matched the description of a dark colored sport utility vehicle or pickup truck that witnesses saw strike 15 year old Ebony Knight on Ind. 25.
The Lafayette Journal and Courier reports that Kirts was held Tuesday in the Tippecanoe County Jail on a $25,000 bond. The Tippecanoe County prosecutor’s office has requested a 72 hour hold to consider formal charges against Kirts.
Charges could be filed by Friday afternoon.
Ebony, an eighth grader, was walking with a female cousin Sunday night on the north shoulder of Ind. 25 when she was hit from behind.
According to documents filed Tuesday in Tippecanoe Superior Court, Ebony’s cousin told investigators that the black SUV struck the girl and then ran her over as it left the scene.
