Here a simple before and after for you:Mebefore my first year of doing the Sun Run InTraining clinic program meantsqueezing three to five years of use out of the same pair of running shoes, bought with little regard for how they suited me and myfeet. After doing the clinics, I have changed my shoes annually each of the last three years and I always seek the advice of a shoe store professional.
That might not seem like a big contrast. Yet to me, it almost certainly meant the difference between injuries, strains and general discomfort and the benefits of pain free runnning. Getting into a new pair of shoes this month has probably also helped me begin to tame the niggling ankle sprain that I brought with me into week 1 of this 13 week clinic series. It still a work in progress the ankle, that is but I definitely feeling less discomfort in my new New Balance 1080s V2.
It just shows again how important shoe selection is for anyone, whether you an accomplished, veteran runner or someone new starting out on the path as a beginner runner or walker. I the first to admit it taken me some time and a few cracks at the SportMedBC RunWalk curriculum that is at the heart of the Sun Run InTraining clinic series to fully appreciate just how important it is. You looking at a guy who put more time into a quick scanof my morning newspapers than considering what kind of running shoe was the best for my purposes, let alone my feet. That why the pre InTraining version of myself could never tell you whether I was in a neutral support shoe or a wide shoe or whatever.
Now, thanks to Sun Run InTraining clinic partners such as Rand Clement of The Right Shoe and Vanda Borean of Rackets Runners, I learning what I need in the way of shoewear to make the most of my running.
This year, I switching from Nike to New Balance and I happy to say it worked for me. It doesn mean I bought air jordan 9 my last pair of shoes adorned by the Nike swooshor that I won grace the three stripes of Adidas or another brand in the future. It does mean that I continue to buy my running shoes from qualified retailers who seem to care as much about my feet and my running as I do. And that a goodchange for me. I learning!
Last weekend, my wife Tawnya (Ritco) and I visited with Vanda at Rackets Runners and we knew ahead of time we be fitted with New Balance gear. For me, that meant getting into my first pair of New Balance shoes in fouryears. The keypart for me was to be reminded about the importance of sizing and, in this case, what I call two dimensional sizing. Most of us know we size 10 and 1/2 or whatever it is. Yet few of us give any thought to shoe width. Trust me, you can go to a shoe pro like Clement or Boeren without them checking out what air jordan 3 shoe width is best for you. In my case, Vanda first put me in a 4E. My short walk around Rackets Runners and then out onto her plaza sidewalk made me realize I was too wide so to speak.
V anda asked for my take and I told her I felt too much movement and I was worried the problem might be compounded once the shoes were worn in. She agreed and put me into a narrower pair of 1080s tha were width size 2E. It the best move I made. The combination of neutral shoe, size 10 1/2 and width 2E has really felt like a great fit for me. I had the best runs of this still early 2012 InTraining campaign and I thinking my sore ankle and knee are among the beneficiaries.
