Cockroaches are primitive insects that have lived on Earth for around 350 million years. There are about 2,500 species of cockroaches, but only six species are classified as pests due to their adaptation to living with humans. If your place has become a breeding ground for the insect, the roaches will not be evenly distributed in a particular location. They love places that are warm, dark, moist and near food sources. The most conclusive sign of cockroaches breeding in your place is simply seeing them in the room that you are in.

Wait until dark to examine the home at night. You will frequently observe a few roaches scurrying to hide when you flip on a light switch. Cockroaches are nocturnal and are rarely seen during the day. If you spot one or two roaches on almost a daily basis in daylight, it can be a sign of the insects breeding in your place. Cockroaches prefer to live in groups and they usually don’t travel far from where they congregate. They establish nests behind walls, in boxes, under appliances, in appliances that have not been used in awhile, in baseboard cracks and near water sources such as leaky pipes and under sinks.

Place commercial roach baits in locations that you suspect pest activity. Before placing the new baits, look inside the plastic container from the openings, so you have an idea of the amount of "food" contained. Put baits under the refrigerator, in the kitchen cupboards, under the kitchen and bathroom sinks, dark wall corners, near trash cans and in the closets. After one month, peek inside the plastic container from the opening on the sides. If the bait inside is smaller than previously or near empty, it is being consumed by roaches.
