Ballet Shoes is a 2007 British television movie. It concerns an eccentric Phileas Fogg like traveler named Matthew Gum. Through the 1920’s on his numerous travels, Gumm finds three abandoned baby girls. He takes them home to raise them and the main part of the story picks up in 1930 when Gumm leaves the three girls in the charge of Sylvia (played by Emilia Fox).
The three girls are named Petrova (Yasmin Paige), Posy (Lucy Boynton) and Pauline (played the Hermoine Grainger actress herself, Emma Watson!). Each decide that someday they will be famous. Each harbors different dreams although they are all instructed in ballet. Petrova and Pauline harbor different desires. The former wants to fly airplanes and the latter finds she is good at acting. Their elder sister Sylvia harbors a love for a lodger the group has taken in to get more money. They find struggles, love, and strength through the years.
Notice I mentioned 2 Harry Potter alums in the title? I have so far forgotten to mention that Richard Griffiths plays Mr. Gum. He is also famous for playing the nefarious Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter films. Here his character is the opposite of Mr. Dursley and he makes a lovable, if sometimes grumpy, father figure.
The acting by the others is superb. Emilia Fox is sympathetic as the heroic Sylvia, who struggles to keep her household together. Yasmin Paige and Emma Watson are also very good in their roles. Lucy Boynton, as the selfish Posy, steals the show with her impressive acting.
This movie is a SMASHING delight that is appropriate for Christmas time. The movie sort of reminded me of the depression era set Kitt Kitteredge: An American Girl with Abigail Breslin. These two movies would make a great double billing!
Ballet Shoes is acceptable for family viewing by older kids. Warning: there is a scene about 40 minutes in where two of the girls share a bath. However, it is anything but suggestive and should not offend.
Charlie Sheen open to being in ‘Two And A Half Men’ finaleThe hit series ‘Two And A Half Men’ is drawing to a close, and fans have been clammering for the return of Charlie Sheen. While many fans would be delighted to see him appear in the finale, there.
